The Best Sun Protection Clothing for Fishing

Learn about the sun’s negative effects, why fishermen and women are more at risk of sun damage, and what to look for when choosing sun protective clothing.

Eager to get out on the water for your next big catch? Not so fast—while nothing beats an afternoon out on the open waters, spending the day fishing puts you at considerable risk for sun damage.

Our goal is to help you fisher folks understand the sun’s negative effects, why fishermen are more at risk of sun damage, and what the best sun protective clothing for fishing is (hint: the higher UPF rating, the better).

The Benefits of Sun Protective Clothing

Sun protective clothing has many benefits.

For one thing, do you enjoy applying and reapplying sunscreen every few hours? Most of us don’t—it’s a pain, but ignoring re-application basically means you’ll burn.

There are some great sunscreens for fishing out there, but many folks choose to use sunscreen alongside UV protective clothing. Clothing that blocks the sun’s harmful rays means you are spared that nuisance while still being protected.

Sun protective clothing also has the added benefit of saving you money in the long run. You can reuse your clothing and won’t have to shell out your hard earned dollars on bottle after bottle of disposable sunscreen.

Let’s face it, humans are forgetful creatures. Forgetting to apply sunscreen can have severe consequences on your tan lines and your health.

Choosing the Best Sun Protective Clothing For Fishing

When it comes to sun protection on the water, regular clothing doesn’t cut it. The American Cancer Society says: “covering up doesn’t block out all UV rays. If you can see light through a fabric, the UV rays can get through, too.”

What is a UPF Rating?

When considering clothing for fishing, you need to pay close attention to the UPF rate. UPF tells you what amount of the sun’s UV radiation will be absorbed by the clothing.

A fabric with UPF 50 means 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation passes through to your skin. Because you’ll be exposed to the sun for long periods of time, you want to look for a high UPF rating such as 40 or 50 UPF.

Other Factors to Consider

  • Is the fabric breathable? It can get pretty hot out on the water, especially in the summer. Look for sun protective clothing that is lightweight and breathable.
  • Is the fabric durable? Look for sun protective clothing fabric that’s long-lasting. You want something that will be durable enough to survive many long fishing trips.

What Sun Protective Clothing Do You Need?

  • Long Sleeve Shirts: When you’re fishing, make sure your arms are protected from the sun. Long sleeve shirts will also help you avoid strange tan lines. Look for a shirt with UPF protection because the sun’s UV rays can make it through regular clothing.
  • Pants/Shorts: Since UV rays can penetrate regular clothing, the skin on your thighs is more exposed than you might think. Look for pants or shorts with high UPF protection.
  • Gloves: When fishing, your hands are exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Gloves have the dual benefit of protecting your hands from the sun as well as helping you keep a grip on your pole. Look for a durable product that can withstand water and last through many fishing trips.
  • Gaiter/Scarf: Your neck is at high risk of sun exposure because it’s one of the first areas on your body the sun can hit. While a hat offers some protection, consider wearing a gaiter or sun scarf with UPF protection to avoid annoying and harmful neck burns.
  • Hat: You can protect the top of your head as well as your face with a hat. Some men’s sun hats offer additional material hanging on the sides or back for added protection from the sun. If you’re not wearing a gaiter or scarf, this added neck protection is especially important.
  • Sunglasses: Ever been told not to stare directly at the sun? Extended exposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts and other health problems that, in serious cases, can lead to temporary vision loss. Look for sunglasses that have 100% UVA and UVB protection or 100% protection from UV 400

What Could Be Better

A few customers have complained about the sizing and stitching of this shirt, with some recommending you buy a size larger than you are if you want the shirt to fit loosely. The product description recommends this as well, encouraging customers to order one size up if they do not want a snug fit. A few buyers mentioned that the shirt frayed after only wearing it once. However, most customers were very happy with their purchase.

What Customers Love

Customers love the versatility of this shirt design. One customer noted that because of its formal style, they were able to wear the shirt outside on the water and out to dinner.

What Could Be Better

According to customers, the sizes run large. Many suggest that if you typically wear a large shirt, it is best to order a medium. A few customers also felt that the Columbia logo took away from the shirt’s formal design. Some customers reported that the colors did not look the same as on the website. Some customers complain about the sizing of this shirt, which they say tends to run large. Some reviews say the sizing of this specific shirt is different from other Columbia products, so it may be worth double-checking your measurements against the product’s sizing guide before buying.

Why Are Fisherman At Risk for Sun Damage?

One of the most appealing aspects of fishing is getting to spend the day outdoors on the water, but with any outdoor activity, you’re at the mercy of the sun.

Exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays that are emitted from the sun can cause a number of negative health conditions. Excess sun exposure can be as harmful to a person’s life expectancy as smoking.

UV exposure can cause:

  • Skin cancer
  • Premature aging
  • Cataracts and other eye disorders
  • Immune system damage

Learn more about the Effects of Ultraviolet (UV) Exposure from Stanford Health Care.

The Importance of Sun Protection For Fishing

People who fish are especially prone to sun damage because of the long hours spent on the water. This prolonged sun exposure, as well as other factors, puts fishermen at risk of a number of health concerns connected to UV rays.

Why people who fish are more at risk:

  • Long hours spent outdoors in the sun
  • UV reflection off the water
  • Lack of shade on open water
  • Lack of adequate shade on boats
  • Years of sun exposure from a lifetime of fishing

When you combine the long days on the water, a lack of shade, and UV reflection, you get an unfortunate recipe for sun damage. If you fish regularly, which many workers and hobby fishers do, you’re adding years upon years of negative sun exposure to your overall health.

Good news though – you can combat the sun’s harmful rays with shade, sunscreen, and sun protective clothing.

There are plenty of sun protective products out there and everyone has their own preferences. What’s important is that you’re thinking about your skin and wearing clothing with a suitable UPF rating whenever you’re out on the water.

Don’t forget that shade and sunscreen are still your friends. Make sure you apply sunscreen to any areas of your body that are not covered with sun protective clothing, such as your lower legs if wearing shorts, or your face. If possible, take your breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water to combat the heat.

Happy fishing! ?
